Monster Truck Cupcake Supplies

Cake mix or homemade cake recipe

You can use one box of chocolate cake mix to make about 20-24 cupcakes. You can also use your favorite homemade cake recipe instead of a box. I’ve included a recipe for homemade chocolate cupcakes and chocolate cakes you can try. You can even use a box of gluten free cake mix for this recipe if your party guests have dietary concerns.

Frosting

You can use two cans of chocolate frosting for the top of these cupcakes. Store-bought frosting can be quite sticky to work with, but it is possible to pipe it into a nice swirl. Alternatively, you can make vanilla buttercream frosting and dye it brown, or use the recipe included in this article for chocolate buttercream frosting.

Other Decorations

To help decorate your monster truck cupcakes, you’ll need some crushed chocolate Oreo cookies as well as some of these mini monster truck toys. You can also use these checkered flag toothpicks to add a little creativity. Check here for other mini monster truck options!

Cake decorating tools

To help you make the coolest cupcakes, you’ll also need some decorating tools like a piping bag, and a large open star piping tip.

How to Make Monster Truck Cupcakes

Step 1: Prepare the Chocolate Cupcakes

1. Preheat your oven to 350°F (180°C) and line a cupcake pan with cupcake liners. Either make a box of chocolate cake mix according to the package instructions or follow the steps below.

2. In a large mixing bowl, sift together the flour, cocoa powder, sugar, baking powder, baking soda, and salt.

3. In a separate bowl, whisk together the eggs, buttermilk, vegetable oil, and vanilla extract until well combined.

4. Pour the wet ingredients into the dry ingredients and mix until just combined.

5. Gradually add the hot water while continuing to mix. The batter will be thin, but that’s okay.

6. Fill each cupcake liner about two-thirds full with batter.

7. Bake in the preheated oven for 18-20 minutes or until a toothpick inserted into the center of a cupcake comes out clean.

8. Remove the cupcakes from the oven and let them cool in the pan for a few minutes before transferring them to a wire rack to cool completely.

Step 2: Prepare the Chocolate Frosting

Use two cans of chocolate frosting or follow these instructions to make your own!

1. In a mixing bowl, sift the cocoa powder to remove any lumps.

2. In a separate bowl, beat the softened butter until creamy and smooth.

3. Add the sifted cocoa powder, powdered sugar, milk, and vanilla extract to the butter.

4. Start mixing on low speed to avoid a cloud of powdered sugar, then increase the speed to high and beat until the frosting is smooth and fluffy. If the frosting is too thick, add a bit more milk; if it’s too thin, add more powdered sugar.

1. Once the cupcakes are completely cool, use a piping bag with an open star tip to frost each cupcake with a generous swirl of chocolate frosting.

2. Sprinkle crushed chocolate Oreo cookies on top of each cupcake to create a dirt-like texture.

Monster Truck Cupcake Tips & FAQ’s

Do I have to use hot water when making this recipe for chocolate cupcakes from scratch?

Hot water is the best kept secret to making a moist chocolate cupcake recipe. It teams up with cocoa powder to help it unleash its rich chocolatey flavor, dissolves any lumpy cocoa bits, keeps the cupcakes moist and tender, and even smooths out the batter’s consistency. So, when you’re whipping up these delightful treats, don’t forget to add in the hot water for that extra burst of chocolatey goodness!

Which toys can I use with these cupcakes?

You can use a few different things to decorate these cupcakes. Edible cupcake toppers and monster truck themed toppers made of wafer paper are a good option. The good news is, our favourite vehicles have been made into mini Hot Wheels monster truck models that you can collect and play with (or decorate desserts with).

Can I use something other than Oreos?

Get creative with the “dirt” by using different crushed cookies or biscuits. Chocolate sandwich cookies (like Oreos) work well, but you can also use chocolate graham crackers, crushed chocolate bars, or brown jimmies for a unique look.

Practice your piping

If you’re new to cupcake decorating, practice your piping skills on a separate surface before frosting the cupcakes. This will help you achieve a nice and consistent swirl. You don’t have to waste the frosting, you can pipe it onto a clean sheet of parchment paper, then scrape it into a bowl and put it back in the piping bag.

Keep it cool

Ensure that your cupcakes are completely cool before frosting them. Warm cupcakes can cause the frosting to melt and lose its shape. You can even put them in a plastic container or bag and leave them in the fridge overnight before decorating them.

Final thoughts on Monster Truck Cupcakes

These cupcakes are perfect for monster truck birthday parties or for a VIP pre-race pit party! They’re a high-octane journey from the kitchen to the race track.

Remember when you’re making a dessert with a toy truck or small pieces, make sure they are appropriate for the age of your guests. You may need to remove the toys and toothpicks from the cupcakes before you serve them to young children.

Share them with friends, make memories, and let the childlike wonder of monster trucks come alive at your next party. With a batch of these Monster Truck Cupcakes, the finish line is always a tasty one!
