Bake Your Cake
You can skip this section if you’re using cake mix, follow your box direction.
Step 1) Preheat Your Oven:
Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease and flour one 9 inch round cake pan or line it with parchment paper for easy removal.
Step 2) Cream the Butter and Sugar:
In a large mixing bowl, cream the softened butter and granulated sugar together. Use a hand mixer or a stand mixer on medium speed. Beat until the mixture is light and fluffy, which should take about 3-4 minutes.
Step 3) Add Eggs and Vanilla:
Add the eggs, one at a time, to the butter and sugar mixture, beating well after each addition. Then, stir in the vanilla extract and mix until well combined.
Step 4) Mix Dry Ingredients:
In a separate bowl, whisk together the all-purpose flour, baking powder, baking soda, and salt.
Step 5) Combine Wet and Dry Ingredients:
Gradually add the dry ingredients to the wet ingredients, alternating with the milk. Start and end with the dry ingredients. Mix on low speed, just until everything is combined. Be careful not to overmix, as this can make the cake dense.
Step 6) Pour into Pan:
Cut parchment paper into 9” circles and line the bottom of your two pans. Pour the cake batter into the lined cake pan. Use a spatula to smooth the top and make it level.
Step 7) Bake:
Place the cake pan into the preheated oven and bake for approximately 25-30 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted into the center of the cake comes out clean. Baking times can vary, so keep an eye on it.
Step 8) Cool:
Allow the cake to cool in the pan for about 10 minutes. Then, remove it from the pan and transfer it to a wire rack to cool completely. Save the parchment paper your cake was baked on and set it aside.
If you’re making your cake in advance, once it’s room temperature, wrap it in plastic wrap and store it in the fridge or freezer.
Shape Your Cake
You can use your parchment paper to help with the design of your cake. One of your round cakes will stay round as the turtle shell. The other will be cut into multiple pieces to use as the head, legs and tail.

You can trace the rounded fin shapes on the outside of the parchment paper then use the inner space of the cake to trace a larger head and two smaller fins. Cut out these shapes and if you’re happy with them, use them as a guide to cut your cake.

Decorate Your Turtle Cake
Make the Buttercream Icing
In a large bowl, combine 5-7 cups of powdered sugar, 2 cups of unsalted butter, 2 teaspoons of vanilla extract, a pinch of salt, and up to ¼ cup of cream or milk. Start mixing on low speed with a hand mixer or stand mixer, gradually increasing to high speed until the icing is fluffy and well-mixed. This should take a few minutes.
Color and Prepare the Icing
Divide the remaining icing into five small bowls, and add food coloring to each. I used dark pink, orange, yellow, purple, and light pink.
Transfer each colored frosting into a separate piping bag, each with a different decorating tip.
Decorate the Cake
Start by piping large rosettes over the surface and sides of the cake with purple, teal and green frosting. It’s often easier to begin with your largest decorations and then fill in with medium then smaller decorations.
Put a small amount of frosting in your piping bag at a time. You can refill the same piping bag with more frosting as you go. The heat from your hand will warm up your frosting as you’re making stars.

Use black frosting or two chocolate candy melts to make big, cute circular eyes.
You can use crushed graham crackers or brown sugar as ‘sand’ to make this turtle cake look like it’s on the beach.
